Location

The Chafariz da Junqueira, sometimes also known as Chafariz da Cordoaria, is located in the Junqueira area, in Lisbon. This notable hydraulic monument is set in a spacious elliptical area, slightly elevated from the public sidewalk, and its limestone cobble pavement contributes to its peculiar atmosphere. Located on Rua da Junqueira, it stands opposite the imposing Cordoaria Nacional building, harmoniously integrating into the surrounding urban fabric of the Portuguese capital.

A Historical Portrait

Built in the year 1821, according to the design of architect Honorato José Correia de Macedo e Sá, this fountain was a vital element in Lisbon's water supply system, connected to the Águas Livres network. Its initial importance for water distribution is visible in the inscription engraved on the upper backrest: "AGOAS LIVRES ANNO DE 1821". Later, in the 20th century, the surrounding area underwent an urban arrangement designed by architect Raul Lino, which enriched its presence on site.

Architectural and Artistic Details

This fountain is a fascinating example of late-Baroque architecture, although with later additions that give it a mix of styles. The central body features a rectilinear backrest, flanked by Tuscan-style pilasters with cushioned shafts. At the top, the structure culminates in a curved element displaying the armillary sphere, the coat of arms of Portugal, and a closed crown, regal symbols that attest to the period of its construction.

The two prominent spouts pour water into a wavy-shaped basin, practically designed. In the early 20th century, two curved side walls were added, enriched with polychrome tile panels. These Neo-Rococo inspired tiles display delicate monochromatic scenes of birds set in landscapes, against a yellowish background. Stone benches integrated into the side walls invite a pause, allowing contemplation of the beauty and history that this fountain embodies.

The Legacy of Water

Initially, the Chafariz da Junqueira was designed for public water supply, an essential role for daily life in Lisbon at the time. Although its "penas de água" (water flow measure) were initially modest, they were increased over time, ensuring its vital function. Today, this fountain remains a valuable historical-cultural landmark, a physical reminder of hydraulic engineering from other times and a point of interest that reveals a layer of the city's rich history through its water and its art.
