The Vimeiro Battle Interpretation Centre is strategically located at the very heart of the battlefield where the historical confrontation took place. It is situated in the area known as Campo da Batalha (Battlefield), in the locality of Vimeiro, within the municipality of Lourinhã.
Its design features a wide panoramic opening, offering a privileged view over the landscape that served as the backdrop for the combats. In this way, the site helps connect the present geography to the history that was written there.
The Vimeiro Battle Interpretation Centre is dedicated to contextualising and explaining the events that culminated in the decisive Battle of Vimeiro. This confrontation, which occurred in August 1808, was a crucial moment that marked the end of the First French Invasion on Portuguese territory.
The visit allows for an understanding of the positioning of the Anglo-Portuguese and French armies, the tactics employed, and the strategic importance of the victory achieved there for the unfolding of the Peninsular Wars.
Inside the Centre, visitors will find a collection of contemporary resources and tools that enhance the understanding of the facts. The exhibition space presents a variety of elements that illustrate the period and the participants in the battle.
