A Rare Historical Legacy

The building housing the Centre for Judicial Studies boasts a remarkable and multifaceted past, spanning several centuries of Portuguese history. Before becoming the prestigious institution it is today, this site served as a royal residence, hosting members of the Portuguese royalty. Subsequently, its walls witnessed the administration of justice, functioning as a court, and finally, its premises housed prisons. This rare transition of functions, from a space of power and nobility to a place of detention and, later, of judicial training, imbues it with a unique atmosphere and a profound connection to the social and legal evolution of the country.

The Essence of Portuguese Justice

Inaugurated in 1979, the Centre for Judicial Studies plays a fundamental role in the Portuguese legal system, serving as the official institution responsible for the initial training of future magistrates. Here, judges and public prosecutors are prepared to join judicial, administrative, and tax courts throughout the country. In addition to initial training, the centre also develops advanced training and refresher courses for lawyers and other legal professionals, as well as research and study activities in the judicial field, contributing to the continuous evolution and qualification of justice in Portugal.
