The Centre for Archaeological Studies is located in Cachoeiras, a quiet area with a rural environment that extends throughout much of the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. More specifically, it is situated in the Labruja area. This setting contributes to an atmosphere of serenity, ideal for the study and deepening of knowledge of the past.
This center is a scientific and cultural facility that serves as a pillar for archaeology in the region. Its main purpose is the management, conservation, and study of the vast archaeological collections that document the long history of Vila Franca de Xira. It is a place of work and research, accessible to all who are interested in the historical roots and the millennial heritage of the area.
A significant part of the center is dedicated to the permanent exhibition "Archaeology in Vila Franca de Xira: Unveiling a Millennial Heritage". This exhibition guides visitors through a journey of the municipality's most important archaeological discoveries. It reveals traces of an ancient Roman road, elements of an Iron Age settlement, and finds from a Roman settlement. The exhibition also covers artifacts from a dolmen, a settlement at Moita da Ladra, the Roman "Villa" of Povos, as well as Senhor da Boa Morte and Povos Castle, and discoveries related to the fortifications of the Lines of Torres.
Beyond the exhibition, the Centre for Archaeological Studies is a dynamic space where research and heritage dissemination are always present. The Experimental Archaeology Workshop stands out, an activity that seeks to simulate an excavation. This initiative allows visitors a more practical and engaging understanding of the concepts and methodologies that archaeologists use to unveil the layers of the past.
The center also houses the important reserve of archaeological collections belonging to the Municipal Museum. This space was designed with modernity to accommodate and preserve a wide diversity of finds and records. It functions as a "behind-the-scenes" area of the museum, fundamental for heritage conservation. This location, which brings together what was previously dispersed, is accessible to interested parties by appointment, providing an in-depth view of archaeological curation and study work.
