Its Origin:

This Modern Art Centre opened its doors in 1983, with the purpose of creating a dedicated space for modern and contemporary art within the scope of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The building was designed to house and display the art collection that the Foundation had been building. The chosen name honours José de Azeredo Perdigão, a figure of great importance in the Foundation's history, who was its first President and played a fundamental role in its development.
