Historical Legacy

Built in the 18th century, around 1747, with a project by architect José Custódio de Sá e Faria, the Patriarcal Granary was initially an initiative of the Patriarchate of Lisbon. Its primary function was the storage of cereals from the Church's vast lands. This utilitarian purpose remained even after 1836, the year the building was acquired by Companhia das Lezírias, continuing to fulfill its original role.

Architectural Features

Its architecture is marked by sober lines, revealing a functional and robust style. On the main facade, the highlight is the entrance portal, which frames a paneled wooden door. Above it, a triangular pediment crowns the ensemble, displaying a coat of arms with high-relief sculptures. These decorative elements refer to the agricultural exploitation of the Lezírias, an activity intrinsically linked to the building's history. Inside, the space reveals three naves with barrel vault ceilings, divided by square-sectioned pillars, demonstrating the solidity of its construction.

Current Cultural Purpose

Recognized as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest) since 2005, the Patriarcal Granary has been transformed into a vibrant cultural facility. Currently, its vast interior serves as a venue for various temporary exhibitions, offering visitors a different perspective on this historic space and the opportunity to enjoy moments of culture and art.
