The Cascata Grande, also known as the Monumental Cascade, is located in Queluz, in the municipality of Sintra, within the Bosquete, an area surrounded by trees and hedges.
Built between 1772 and 1777 and completed in 1778, this cascade was designed by Jean-Baptiste Robillion and is the first of its kind in Lisbon, inspiring the construction of others in palaces and estates of the time.
The structure is typical of the Rococo style, combining art and nature. It is decorated with sculpted stone and rocks of grotesque shapes, conferring an impressive visual.
The cascade features a central scowl, from which water flows, and two lateral phoenix figures, which also release water. The cascade falls into an oval basin lined with 20th-century tiles, decorated with marine motifs.
At the top, there is a large water reservoir that feeds the cascade, next to a balcony with a balustrade decorated with various statues.
The Cascata Grande is one of the highlights of the Hanging Garden, being an unmissable attraction for those visiting the region, standing out in the water features of the park.
Access to the cascade is easy, making it an excellent option for walks and visits.
Although the current operational state of the cascade may vary, the site maintains a significant historical and aesthetic value.
