Founded in 1551, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Cascais was one of the first charitable institutions in the region. The original temple, the Ermida de Santo André, was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in 1777.
The church has remarkable architecture with a facade divided into three parts, with stone pilasters and a main portal. The two unfinished lateral towers are one of its highlights.
The interior features a wide nave covered with a barrel vault and a high choir with a wooden balustrade. There are two lateral altars in gilded wood carvings and a chancel with a Rococo altarpiece.
The chancel has a triumphal arch in stone, with an altarpiece decorated with columns and images of Santa Bárbara and Santo António. The sacristy, one of the oldest elements, has a wooden ceiling with a painted central medallion.
The church has a collection of religious silverware, sacred images, a 19th-century terracotta nativity scene, processional banners, and a 16th-century altarpiece with biblical scenes.
Mass in English is held every Sunday at 12:30 PM. The church is located in Largo da Misericórdia, in the historical center of Cascais.
The church is known for its tranquility and beautiful architecture. The space is ideal for a calm and contemplative visit.
