Casa de Santa Maria was a luxurious private residence acquired by the Cascais City Council in October 2004. Since then, it has become a museum. The house was built in 1902 as a wedding gift for the daughter of Jorge O`Neil, an aristocrat. The project was designed by the architect Raul Lino, known for using only Portuguese materials and influenced by the Moorish style.
The building mixes various architectural styles, with a strong influence of the Moorish style. The interior features horseshoe arches that connect the main spaces of the house, reflecting this influence.
In 1914, the house was purchased by the engineer José Lino Júnior, brother of Raul Lino, who expanded the house and added 17th-century tiles and a painted ceiling. In 1934, the house was acquired by the Espírito Santo family and received illustrious visitors, such as the Duchess of Luxembourg, King Umberto II of Italy, and the former US President, Richard Nixon.
The house can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday. It does not have movable artifacts but displays a rich collection of tiles and paintings, especially from the Portuguese Baroque period. On the ground floor, the walls are covered with blue and yellow tiles from the Convent of Marvila in Lisbon. On the first floor, the Chapel displays tiles with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, produced in Talavera, Spain. The ceiling of the Chapel and the Great Hall have paintings by Raul Lino. The attic features avant-garde tiles from the 1920s.
The garden of Casa de Santa Maria is a pleasant space for walking, complementing the visit to the interior of the house with green and landscaped areas that highlight the beauty of the place.
