Situated on the picturesque coast of Cascais, Bateria Alta rises north of Praia da Água Doce, in an elevated position that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Its strategic location offers a privileged perspective over the vastness of the sea and the rugged beauty of the coastline. This specific point, in the area of Forte do Guincho and the locality of Cresmina, is integrated into a natural environment marked by the proximity of sand and rocks, typical elements of this coastal strip.
The history of Bateria Alta dates back to the 18th century, a period when it was built as an integral part of the vast coastal defense system that protected the Portuguese seafront. Its function was crucial in the surveillance and safeguarding of the coast against the naval threats of the time. In the 19th century, this fortification underwent expansion works, becoming part of a larger set of defensive structures, which underscores its continued importance in the region's military strategy.
Currently, Bateria Alta is in a state of ruins, with only some of its original walls still visible. Despite the passage of time and the action of the elements, the still-visible remains allow a glimpse of the grandeur that once characterized this building. The site, recognized for its historical and heritage value, was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1977, highlighting its relevance to Portugal's cultural legacy. From here, a stunning panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean unfolds, inviting contemplation of the surrounding nature.
