Casal Mateus is located in the town of Lourinhã, a municipality recognized for its valuable paleontological heritage. Although it is a private residence, its location is integrated into the daily life of the town, in an area that reflects the community's connection to its natural history. Its presence is symbolic, associated with the development of dinosaur research that so marks the identity of Lourinhã.
This place was the home of Isabel Mateus, a pioneering and indispensable figure in the field of paleontology in Portugal. Co-founder of the Lourinhã Museum, Isabel Mateus dedicated a large part of her life to the discovery and study of dinosaur fossils in the region. It was from Casal Mateus that her passion for science flourished, culminating in discoveries of international significance, such as the remarkable nests of dinosaur eggs and embryos that placed Lourinhã on the world map of paleontology.
In addition to being a family residence, Casal Mateus played a significant, albeit discreet, role in supporting the nascent scientific community of Lourinhã. Over the years, it was a welcoming space for dozens of volunteers and paleontology students who traveled to the town to collaborate with the Lourinhã Museum. It thus constituted an informal meeting point and a foundation of support for those who contributed to the important paleontological research in the region.
