Roque Gameiro House Museum

Category: Civil Architecture > Museum

District: Lisboa > Amadora > Amadora > Reboleira

Location

The Roque Gameiro House Museum is located in the Reboleira area, in the municipality of Amadora. It is situated in a predominantly urban area, integrated into the city's fabric.

Although the current surroundings are urban, the house was built at a time, in the late 19th century, when this area still maintained rural characteristics, contrasting significantly with the landscape that surrounded the property at the time.

A House with History

This unique building dates back to around 1898, having been erected to serve as a residence and studio for Alfredo Roque Gameiro, a prominent figure in Portuguese watercolor painting, and his family.

Conceived as a home and workspace for this artist and his descendants, many of whom were also linked to the visual arts, what was called the "Tribe of Brushes", the house is an important testament to the creative environment and daily life that unfolded there.

Architecture and Art in Decoration

The architecture of the Roque Gameiro House reflects the taste of the era, inspired by ideals that valued national identity. The project included contributions from figures such as Raul Lino, associated with the concept of the "Portuguese House," and Roque Gameiro himself.

In its decoration, an interesting mix of elements can be observed, drawing references from popular architecture of different regions of the country, combined with naturalistic and revivalist touches. One of the highlights is the tilework, where notable patterns are found, particularly of naturalistic inspiration, attributed to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.

The Artistic Legacy

More than just a building, the house is a space that celebrates the art and legacy of Alfredo Roque Gameiro, master of watercolor. It was here that the artist lived, worked, and influenced the next generation of his family in the path of the arts.

The place preserves the memory of this fertile environment and continues to be an active cultural center. Through exhibitions and activities, the connection to the artistic techniques that marked the work of Roque Gameiro and his family, such as watercolor, drawing, and engraving, is maintained.
