The Palmira Bastos House Museum is located in the tranquil Aldeia Gavinha, a small village integrated into the São Martinho area, in the municipality of Alenquer. Its location allows visitors to experience a calmer environment, characteristic of the villages in the interior of Alenquer.
Situated in a rural, yet easily accessible, context, the house museum invites a stroll through its surroundings, offering an authentic perspective on life in the region.
This museological space is dedicated to the life and work of Palmira Bastos, one of the most notable figures in Portuguese theatre. The house where this great actress was born has been transformed into a place that preserves her memory for future generations.
A visit allows the public to connect closely with the journey of an artist who, despite her national prominence and recognition as a "lady of the world," maintained a deep and affectionate connection to her humble origins in Aldeia Gavinha.
Inside the House Museum, visitors will find a collection of personal items that belonged to Palmira Bastos, offering an intimate glimpse into her daily life. Part of the collection includes various photographs, some provided by her own family and others from the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, which document her rich career and different phases of life.
Common-use utensils and clothing help to create a vivid image of her existence and context, inviting reflection on her remarkable contribution to the performing arts in Portugal.
The creation of this museum in 2000 resulted from a long-held wish of Palmira Bastos herself, who expressed the desire to see her "little cradle tidied up." This wish was embraced and realized by the community of Aldeia Gavinha, who saw in the reconstruction of the actress's birthplace a way to honour her legacy.
The space is the fruit of a joint effort, involving the local parish council and other entities, transforming the original ruins into the house that can be visited today. In addition to being a museum, the building also serves as an important hub for cultural revitalization in the region, hosting other artistic initiatives.
