Casa Lino Gaspar is located in Alto do Lagoal, in the Quinta da Terrugem development, in the locality of Lagoal, in the municipality of Oeiras. Its position is privileged, situated on a sloping plot of land that offers a wide horizon landscape, with views over the mouth of the Tagus River and the vast Atlantic Ocean. This scenic environment was a determining factor in its design.
Designed by architect João Andresen between 1954 and 1955, Casa Lino Gaspar stands out in the panorama of modern Portuguese architecture. It resulted from close collaboration and a remarkable dialogue between the architect and its owners, who shared an uncommon cultural openness for the time. This interaction allowed Andresen to explore and apply innovative concepts, moving away from the conventions of the era and introducing a sense of informality into bourgeois housing. Its importance is recognized, being classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
The building was conceived with a modular floor plan, organized functionally, allowing for great versatility of spaces. The horizontality of the house is a notable aspect, evidenced by the checkered floors and the roofs that seem to have their own identity, detached from the main surface of the construction. The choice of materials is diverse, including elements such as brick trellises, large glass panels, and masonry, which give the exteriors a striking and textural appearance. The use of a pergola on the roof slab of the patio adds a final touch to the ensemble.
Casa Lino Gaspar stands out for its concern in establishing a harmonious connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding natural landscape. The house strategically opens up to the south and southeast views, maximizing the entry of light and the enjoyment of the scenery. However, on its street-facing facade, it presents itself as more closed, ensuring the privacy of its inhabitants. This duality of openness and seclusion is one of the distinctive aspects of the project, highlighting the integration of nature and light in the experience of those who inhabit and visit the site.
