Location

Casa Igrejas Caeiro is located in Quinta da Terrugem, in the Lagoal area, within the municipality of Oeiras. This remarkable property is situated on Alto do Lagoal, at an elevated point offering a privileged perspective. From here, the landscape extends across the valley, with unobstructed views of Lisbon to the east and the exit of the Tagus bar to the west, providing a scenic panorama of the estuary.

A Cultural Legacy on Display

This space invites an immersion into the life and work of Francisco Igrejas Caeiro (1917-2012), a prominent figure in 20th-century Portuguese culture. Recognized as an actor, radio and television announcer, and author, Igrejas Caeiro left a valuable heritage that allows for an understanding of the artistic and modernist movements of his time. His home reflects the personality of a cultured and insightful man who, despite the adversities of the era, found refuge for his creativity in this place, notably by establishing a studio to continue his radio broadcasts.

The Architecture of the Modern Movement

Built in 1958, the house was designed by architect Keil do Amaral, a leading name in Portuguese architecture. The project follows the principles of the Modern Movement, characterized by functionality and integration with the surrounding landscape. In its time, the residence was even described by the press as a "Hollywood-style villa" due to its scale and avant-garde design. The house and its garden are considered one of Keil do Amaral's best-preserved works, maintaining the original concept and a taste for functionalist comfort intact.

Interiors of Character and Art

The interior design of the house is an exemplary testament to the articulation between the architect's vision and the taste of its owners. All the furniture was designed in an integrated manner, evidencing an extension of the architectural thought. Modernity is present in the choice of objects, including a valuable collection of modern art with works by painters such as Júlio Pomar, Jorge de Oliveira, and Abel Manta. Ceramics also hold a prominent place, showcased in the impressive "Teatro" (1959) tile panel by Maria Keil, which adorns a glazed gallery with a sea view, and in pieces by artists like Jorge Barradas and Rosa Ramalho's "Cristo."

The Private Studio of an Iconic Voice

One of the most unique features of the house is the presence of a professional recording studio, which allowed Igrejas Caeiro to produce his radio programs from his own residence. This space, equipped with the most advanced technology of the time, was where highly successful programs, such as "Os Companheiros da Alegria," were recorded. The house also houses an extensive personal library, with thousands of books, and a vast collection of vinyl records, offering an intimate perspective on the passions and intellectual universe of Igrejas Caeiro and his wife, the actress Irene Velez.
