Casa do Artista is located in Carnide, a district in Lisbon that offers a quieter, more residential environment. This position, slightly away from the city center, contributes to an atmosphere of serenity, inviting a calmer and more contemplative experience for visitors.
Founded in 1999, Casa do Artista was born from the vision and commitment of a group of prominent figures in the Portuguese artistic scene, including actors such as Armando Cortez, Carmen Dolores, Manuela Maria, and Pedro Solnado. Its creation represented a collective effort to establish a space of support and recognition for performing arts professionals. Inspired by an idea brought from Brazil by Raul Solnado, the institution has consolidated itself as a symbolic landmark, underscoring the importance of valuing and dignifying artists in Portugal.
The Casa do Artista building, designed by Atelier Augusto Silva Ferreira dos Santos, Luís Rebelo de Andrade, and Francisca Ramalho, is an example of contemporary architecture, conceived to host and promote diverse artistic manifestations. Within its facilities, the art gallery stands out, offering a stage for exhibitions and the appreciation of various plastic arts. The venue also houses the Armando Cortez Theatre, an active space that continues to be a meeting point and creation hub for the performing arts, keeping the spark of performance alive.
Outdoors, Casa do Artista features a garden that invites calm and reflection. This green space is a place of deep memory and homage, as it is here that the ashes of actor Armando Cortez, one of the institution's founders, were scattered. The spirit of the place is well translated by its motto, "It is not allowed to grow old here!", which evokes the vitality and passion for art cultivated there.
