Casa do Albardeiro is located in the village of Abrigada, part of the wider area of Abrigada and Cabanas de Torres, in the municipality of Alenquer. This area is situated near the southern slope of the majestic Serra do Montejunto, lending it a prominent natural setting and a distinctive landscape for visitors to the region.
This space is dedicated to preserving and sharing the memory of the rural daily life that once characterized the municipality of Alenquer. Its name comes from having been, in the early 20th century, part of the residence and workshop of João António Lé, a local albardeiro (pack-saddle maker). Currently, the house remains under the care of one of this old artisan's granddaughters, keeping alive the family connection to its roots and the authenticity of the place.
The collection of Casa do Albardeiro is a genuine compilation of objects that tell stories of rural life. many of these pieces are part of the albardeiro's family estate, complemented by acquisitions, donations, and loans from villagers and friends. Each utensil and furniture item contributes to recreating an environment that evokes the simplicity and ingenuity of our ancestors' way of life, reflecting the customs and practices of a bygone era.
More than just a repository of objects, Casa do Albardeiro is a project in continuous evolution, focused on collecting and sharing the narratives of the local people and their customs. The site has been host to initiatives that celebrate popular traditions, such as the annual commemoration of Dia do Pão por Deus (All Saints' Day bread tradition), involving the local community and children. This dynamism underscores the House's commitment to being an active center for safeguarding local ethnographic heritage.
