Location

The Hermitage of São Julião is located in Carvoeira, in the municipality of Mafra, in a tranquil and secluded setting, high on the cliff, above a geological fault.

History

This temple probably dates from the 16th century, although the worship of São Julião in this location may be even older. Over the years, many pilgrims have come here on pilgrimage, staying in the modest dwellings that surround the hermitage. The famous hermit Mateus Álvares, who impersonated D. Sebastião, is associated with this place.

Architecture

The hermitage has a longitudinal plan consisting of a galilee, a nave, a chancel, a sacristy, and some annexes. The facades are white with blue details, reflecting a neoclassical style. Inside, the high choir rests on Tuscan columns, and there is a quadrangular pulpit, a perfect triumphal arch supported by Tuscan pilasters, as well as Mannerist polychrome carved altarpieces and a main altarpiece executed according to late Baroque principles.

Interior

The interior walls are covered with tiles that narrate the lives of São Julião and Santa Basilissa, who were martyred in the early 4th century. The altar highlights the images of the saints, and the space includes a baptistery.

Cross

In front of the hermitage, there is a limestone cross with inscriptions and a tile panel which, despite being degraded, is worthy of appreciation.

This religious event is an important celebration that attracts many visitors every year.

Path of Souls

This route is like a Via Sacra that connects the Hermitage of São Julião to the Carvoeira cemetery. Composed of five crosses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, this path was probably designed to remind us of the souls who suffered in this territory, providing a moment of reflection and spirituality.

Access

Access is via a covered galilee, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Cultural significance

The hermitage and the path have great significance in the local culture, representing the faith and history of the region, becoming points of interest for those who visit Mafra.
