Located in the parish of Carnide, in Lisbon, the Colégio Militar is in an easily accessible location and is part of the city's historical landscape.
Founded in 1803 by Field Marshal António Teixeira Rebelo, the Colégio Militar began as a school for the sons of military officers, expanding over the years to include civilian students. Since 1859, it has occupied the same building in Luz, Lisbon.
This public military school offers an academic curriculum equal to that of the Ministry of Education, but with a strong military component. Students learn subjects such as Military Instruction, Horsemanship and Fencing, in addition to regular subjects.
The Colégio Militar is a mixed institution, admitting both boys and girls. Since 2013, the school has started accepting female students, becoming a co-educational school with optional boarding.
The Colégio Militar has several traditions, such as the Solemn Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year and the parade of the Collegiate Battalion on the College's Anniversary, celebrated on March 3rd. These ceremonies are unique opportunities to see students in gala uniform, a historical and distinctive attire.
Students at the College follow a Code of Honor that values principles such as loyalty, discipline, and respect for the uniform and the homeland.
The students' gala uniform, in a brownish color, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Colégio Militar, highlighting the barretina, a hat adopted in 1866.
The Colégio Militar is one of the most decorated institutions of the Portuguese Armed Forces, with several national and international insignia and medals in recognition of its history and the value of its students.
For those visiting Lisbon, the Colégio Militar offers a unique perspective on Portugal's military and educational history, being a place of interest for those who appreciate culture and tradition.
