Situated next to the coastal cliffs, with a direct view of the sea, in Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Torres Vedras.
The current chapel was built in the 18th century, after the collapse of the old medieval hermitage that existed closer to the cliff.
Tradition has it that, after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami, the image of Saint Helena appeared on the nearby beach, brought by the sea. It is believed to have belonged to the former convent of Penafirme.
Simple but well-maintained facade, with an unobstructed view of the ocean. The surrounding area is quiet and picturesque.
Highlights include the 18th-century gilded altarpiece and the beautiful blue tile panels. There are two Gothic images, Saint Helena and Our Lady of the Milk.
Welcoming and well-preserved space. It has benches and an accessible choir loft. There is often someone available to welcome visitors.
Saint Helena is the patron saint of Santa Cruz. Currently, due to the small size of the chapel, the main religious celebrations take place in the new church in the locality.
Although little known to tourists, it is a special place, with a serene atmosphere, ideal for a calm visit by the sea.
