Monument from the Late Neolithic period (around 4,500 to 2,000 BC), located in Caneças, municipality of Odivelas, District of Lisbon. Classified as a National Monument since 1944.
Originally a megalithic tomb with a polygonal chamber composed of eight large stones about 3 meters high. It also included a small access corridor.
Excavations revealed traces of a tomb and human bones. Many fragments of flint were found, suggesting that the area was used to produce stone tools.
The Dólmen das Pedras Grandes is the only surviving megalithic monument in the Caneças region. Other dolmens were discovered, but disappeared over time due to the reuse of the stones in agricultural practices and construction.
First identified in 1880 by archaeologist Carlos Ribeiro. It was later classified as a National Monument in 1944, highlighting its relevance to Portuguese heritage.
At the end of 2018, the monument was integrated into a small urban park. The stones were repositioned to give a better idea of their original structure, making it a point of cultural and historical interest for visitors.
