History of the João de Deus Museum

The João de Deus Museum was inaugurated on January 12, 1917. It originated from a republican initiative, led by the son of the poet João de Deus, to promote cultural and pedagogical ideals. The building was designed by the architect Raul Lino, featuring paintings by Leal da Câmara.

Building Classification

Since 2012, the João de Deus Museum and Garden-School have been classified as Monuments of Public Interest, recognizing their cultural and historical value.

Museum Collection

The museum exhibits personal objects of João de Deus and his son, João de Deus Ramos, as well as sculptures and works of art. The historical library houses an important collection of Methods for Beginning Reading and Arithmetic, as well as manuscripts, correspondence, and publications that document the 19th and 20th centuries.

Activities and Events

Since 1920, the João de Deus Museum has been promoting courses in the area of Pre-Primary Didactics and organizes cultural events such as literary sessions, lectures, and conferences.

Museum Library

The library, currently undergoing modernization, has a vast documentary collection, including books, periodicals, photographs, and cartographic material, with emphasis on works in the areas of Education, History, Literature, Religion, and Philosophy.

João de Deus Higher School of Education

This non-profit entity belongs to the Associação de Jardins-Escola João de Deus (Association of João de Deus Garden-Schools), an organization with more than a century of history, dedicated to teacher training and the development of educational methods.

João de Deus Toy Libraries

The association also coordinates an itinerant project of mobile toy libraries, which offers educational activities to children aged 3 to 12, especially those in communities in situations of social exclusion.

Recognitions and Awards

The Associação de Jardins-Escolas João de Deus has been awarded for its educational initiatives, including the Prémio Manus Cais in 2004 and a distinction from UNESCO in 1997 for the fight against illiteracy.
