Boca do Inferno is located in the Gandarinha area, in the town of Cascais, within the municipality of the same name. Situated west of the town, this site is part of the Costa da Guia, characterized by high cliffs. Its position allows for a direct observation of the immense Atlantic, marking a prominent point in the coastal landscape.
This impressive natural phenomenon is a peculiar rock formation, composed of a sea arch and a grotto. Its origin is due to the continuous action of water. Over millennia, rainwater, slightly acidic, has eroded weaker limestone veins in the cliffs. What was initially a sea grotto eventually collapsed, giving way to the chasm and the natural arch observed today. The surrounding rocks display forms sculpted by time and the elements.
The name "Boca do Inferno" (Hell's Mouth) is a direct reference to the spectacle of the waves that crash here. On days of greater maritime agitation, the force of the Atlantic Ocean manifests dramatically, with waves entering the abyss and exploding in columns of water and foam, creating a cavernous and impressive sound. However, even on calmer sea days, the beauty of the place remains, offering a captivating view of coastal erosion and the blue vastness. There is an observation platform that allows this interaction between rock and sea to be contemplated safely.
Boca do Inferno is not just a geological landmark; it is also a stage for stories and curiosities. At the end of the 19th century, in 1896, this natural formation gained prominence by being featured in one of the first motion pictures, a silent short film that captured waves colliding with the rocks. Later, in 1930, the site was the scene of an unusual episode involving the British occultist Aleister Crowley. It is said that he faked his own death at this location, in a plot that captured the attention of the press at the time. A plaque commemorates this singular event on the rocks of Boca do Inferno.
