The Estádio José Alvalade is located in the area of Quinta do Lambert, in the Lumiar parish, Lisbon. Its location is within a modern urban area of the Portuguese capital, known for being one of the city's major sports and commercial hubs.
The surroundings are characterized by a contemporary urban landscape, with infrastructures that complement the stadium's functionality, making it a landmark in the northern part of Lisbon.
Inaugurated in 2003, the current Estádio José Alvalade was designed by architect Tomás Taveira, standing out for its striking aesthetic. With a capacity for approximately 50,095 spectators, all seats are seated and covered, providing comfort in any weather condition. The stadium's original design was known for the vibrancy of its colors, with a mosaic of multicoloured seats that, over time, were converted to green, the emblematic color of the club it hosts.
Designed as a multifunctional space, its construction took into account not only sporting events but also the possibility of hosting large shows, benefiting from specific acoustic engineering for large-scale concerts. Currently, the stadium is undergoing a modernization process that aims, among other improvements, to remove the moat and increase its capacity.
The Estádio José Alvalade is a venue with a rich sporting history. It was built for the 2004 European Football Championship, hosting important matches of the competition, including one of the semi-finals. Furthermore, it hosted the UEFA Cup final in 2005 and was one of the venues chosen for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2020. It is also frequently chosen to host matches of the Portuguese National football team and will be the venue for the UEFA Women's Champions League final in 2025.
The memory of the old Estádio José Alvalade, inaugurated in 1956 and demolished in 2003 to make way for the current venue, is deeply linked to the history of music in Portugal. Considered by many as the "Cathedral of Rock", it hosted, since the 80s, concerts by renowned international artists such as Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Rolling Stones, and U2, decisively contributing to Lisbon's affirmation on the route of major world tours.
The Estádio José Alvalade is the home of Sporting Clube de Portugal, one of the most important sports clubs in the country. Its name pays homage to José Alvalade, the founder and first member of the club in the early 20th century. The venue is a symbol of the identity and passion of the 'leonine' supporters, having witnessed countless significant moments in the club's history since its inauguration.
For visitors, it's possible to feel the vibrant atmosphere emanating from this place, deeply rooted in Lisbon's sports culture. The stadium is not just a sports infrastructure, but a meeting and celebration point for a vast community of supporters, reflecting the importance of football in the life of the city and the country.
