The Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica is located in a dynamic urban area in Lisbon, in the parish of São Domingos de Benfica. Popularly known as "Estádio da Luz" (Stadium of Light), this designation refers to the area where it is situated, historically linked to the old Estrada da Luz (Road of Light) and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz (Church of Our Lady of Light), giving it a unique identity in the city's landscape.
Owned by Sport Lisboa e Benfica, this stadium is affectionately nicknamed "A Catedral" (The Cathedral) by its fans. Inaugurated on October 25, 2003, the current venue succeeded a previous stadium which, in its time, was one of the largest in Europe, marking generations of Portuguese people and football enthusiasts. Its official name, Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, underlines the strong connection to the club and its history in the national sports scene.
Designed by Populous (formerly HOK Sport Venue Event), the Estádio da Luz project stands out for its emphasis on light and transparency. The roof, made of polycarbonate, allows natural light to flood the stadium's interior, creating a distinct atmosphere. The structure is supported by four imposing steel arches, 43 meters high, which not only contribute to its stability but also shape the distinctive aesthetic of the cascading stands, resulting in a visually appealing and modern profile.
Classified as a Category 4 stadium by UEFA, the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica has been the setting for some of the most important sporting and cultural events in Portugal. It hosted the final of the 2004 European Football Championship and, later, the finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2014 and 2020, solidifying its international reputation. In addition to major football competitions, the venue has also hosted internationally renowned concerts and large-scale ceremonies, confirming its role as a meeting point for culture and entertainment in the Portuguese capital.
