The João de Deus Neighborhood is located in the town of Arruda dos Vinhos, a municipality of the same name. It is integrated into the town's urban fabric, occupying an area that, after its redevelopment, has become more integrated and accessible. Its position contributes to the local urban fabric, maintaining a fluid connection with the surrounding areas of the town.
Built between 1949 and 1952, the João de Deus Neighborhood emerged from a social housing policy promoted at the time by the government and the municipality. Its initial design comprised sixteen single-family homes, reflecting architecture conceived for affordable housing. These houses, simple and functional in design, form a cohesive complex that marked an era in Arruda dos Vinhos' housing development.
Between 2020 and 2022, the João de Deus Neighborhood underwent extensive redevelopment. In addition to the restoration of the original homes and the addition of new units, the intervention brought new facilities that enrich the area. Among these, an outdoor amphitheater stands out, conceived as a space for gatherings and activities, along with the creation of community gardens, which invite cultivation and social interaction. The redevelopment also integrated a section of the municipal cycle path network, offering a different way to explore the town.
The recent intervention in the João de Deus Neighborhood symbolizes a commitment to quality of life and housing dignity. The project demonstrates how architecture can be a means to revitalize communities, transforming a neighborhood with history into a modern and functional space. This renovation was not limited to infrastructure improvements; it also aimed to strengthen social cohesion, creating a more pleasant and accessible environment, both for its residents and for those who visit it as part of Arruda dos Vinhos' heritage.
