The Dolphin Bay is integrated within the Lisbon Zoo, a notable green space situated in the São Domingos de Benfica area. This part of the Lisbon municipality offers an environment that, despite being urban, is distinguished by the presence of a vast natural area, providing a refuge for wildlife and a point of interest for visitors to the city.
Inaugurated in May 1995, the Dolphin Bay was designed with decoration evoking a typical Portuguese fishing village. This thematic setting serves as the backdrop for its main attraction. The particularity of the water used in the tanks stands out, as it is treated with ozone instead of chlorine, a method that contributes to maintaining superior quality, comparable to internationally recognized standards.
The Dolphin Bay complex consists of four distinct tanks, totaling over four thousand cubic meters of saltwater. It includes a large main tank, two secondary tanks, and a medical tank, designed for specialized care. The latter features functionalities such as water temperature control, treatment administration capabilities, and a hoist, allowing for depth adjustment as needed and facilitating animal monitoring when necessary.
The Dolphin Bay is home to specimens of the Common Bottlenose Dolphin species, known for their intelligence and social behavior. Through interactions with the keepers, the aim is to emphasize the importance of marine biodiversity conservation and the value of the oceans. The presentations that take place in this space aim to raise awareness about the growing threat of marine litter and the need to adopt more conscious behaviors, promoting reflection on the protection of aquatic habitats and their inhabitants.
