The Watermill of A dos Cunhados is located in the town of A dos Cunhados, within the area known as Sobreiro Curvo, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Its location, although situated in an area that is progressively urbanizing, still allows one to appreciate the historical relationship of the site with water and the rural environment that once dominated this landscape. It is situated in a setting that invites the observation of local history.
With a history dating back to the 15th century, the Watermill of A dos Cunhados is a testament to the importance of cereal milling in the life of Portuguese rural communities. For over five hundred years, this watermill was a central point for the region's farmers, where grain was transformed into flour, sustaining generations. Its structure and location next to a watercourse are elements that tell the story of engineering and human labor in food production.
The watermill's journey to the present day is marked by a remarkable preservation effort. After being acquired in the early 21st century by Pró-Memória, a local cultural association, the watermill underwent a careful restoration process. This initiative allowed the site to be transformed into an Interpretation Centre, recently inaugurated. In this space, it is possible to fully understand the watermill's relevance to the local economy and culture, based on historical studies and the valuable testimonies of the last millers who worked there.
