The Church of Misericórdia is located in the heart of Azambuja, nestled within the central area of the town. It is situated in Praça de Santa Cruz, directly opposite the Main Church (Igreja Matriz), making it an easily accessible and recognizable landmark for those strolling through the town center.
The history of the Church of Misericórdia dates back to an ancient hospice that existed on the site as early as 1492. The current temple was founded in 1569 by the local Brotherhood of Misericórdia, with the sanction of King D. Sebastião, marking its importance in the religious and social life of Azambuja. Its historical and cultural value is recognized, having been classified as a Monument of Municipal Interest since 2003.
The church's exterior stands out for its smooth and delicate façade design, featuring architecture with Mannerist influences. The most notable element is the main portal, adorned with a cornice. On this portal, there is an inscription commemorating one of its benefactresses, Isabel Pires de Azambuja, and it is topped by a decorative shell surmounted by cherubs, giving it a unique presence in the square.
Inside, the Church of Misericórdia reveals itself as a small, single-nave temple, with a longitudinal plan that integrates the chancel and the sacristy. The space is enriched by a vast collection of 18th-century azulejos (tiles), covering the walls and friezes. One can observe historied panels in the chancel, depicting moments from the life of Saint John the Baptist. The pulpit, also from the 18th century, displays details such as an angel's head in relief and vegetal elements, with a representation of the Holy Spirit above its access.
