Amélia Carvalheira Garden

Category: Nature > Garden

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Campo Pequeno

Location

Amélia Carvalheira Garden is located in the Campo Pequeno area, in Lisbon, within the Avenidas Novas parish. It is a landscaped urban space that opens onto Avenida Marquês de Tomar and is adjacent to the imposing Church of Our Lady of Fátima. This garden, covering approximately 2800 square meters, serves as a meeting point and thoroughfare, offering a green oasis in the heart of the city.

A Tribute to Sculpture

The name of this garden pays tribute to Maria Amélia Carvalheira da Silva (1904-1998), a notable Portuguese sculptor. Known for her extensive work in sacred art, with creations present in various churches throughout the country, including the Sanctuary of Fátima, Amélia Carvalheira had a special connection to Lisbon, having lived nearby for over sixty years. In recognition of her artistic legacy and her proximity to the area, the city dedicated this green space to her. In 2024, a memorial in her honor, created by sculptor Carlos Bajouca, was erected here.

Design and Renovation

Originally designed in 1960 by Professor Gonçalo Ribeiro Teles, a seminal figure in Portuguese landscape architecture, the Amélia Carvalheira Garden retains elements of its initial design. One can observe the arched path that traverses the space, the traditional stone pavements and slabs, and some ash trees that have remained since its conception. Over the years, the garden underwent several adaptations, including an intervention in 1971 by Landscape Architect Leonel Fadigas. More recently, in 2022, the garden underwent a comprehensive revitalization, aiming to modernize its infrastructures and enhance its uses for residents and visitors.

A Space for Everyone

This garden offers a diverse experience, combining natural beauty with urban functionality. It is a place where one can enjoy the tranquility of nature in the heart of the city, with inviting lawns and a selection of trees that provide shade and coolness. Beyond being a space for contemplation, Amélia Carvalheira Garden is equipped for various leisure activities. Younger visitors will find a play area here, while adults can make use of physical exercise equipment. Considering four-legged companions, there is also a fenced and properly equipped area dedicated to dogs. The recent revitalization enhanced the planting component, with shrubs and herbaceous plants, and modernized the lighting, making it an even more pleasant and accessible space.
