The Aula Magna is located in the Campo Grande area of Lisbon, a district with a significant university presence. It is situated within the Cidade Universitária complex and forms an integral part of the University of Lisbon's Rectory building.
This setting imbues it with a particular atmosphere, as it lies at the heart of a major center of knowledge and culture in the capital, within an urban environment of great scale and importance.
The conception of the Aula Magna dates back to the studies of architect Pardal Monteiro in the 1940s. Its current appearance and capacity, which allows it to accommodate 1547 people, were finalized by António Pardal Monteiro, and the space was inaugurated in December 1961.
Upon its opening, the Aula Magna was widely publicized in the media as the largest hall in the country, a remarkable achievement for its time. Its amphitheater design was conceived to allow spectators to witness the entrance of the academic procession, which descended from the Salão Nobre and accessed the space through an imposing golden door. The interior design, including the furniture and the notable plaster ceiling, which integrated lighting and acoustic elements, was the work of Daciano da Costa, representing one of the first projects of his firm under his own name. To this day, it remains true to its original function, preserved and adapted to modern times.
Since its inauguration, the Aula Magna has established itself as a unique venue in Portugal, recognized for its versatility in hosting diverse events. With a multipurpose stage covering an area of 180m², it has been the chosen setting for hundreds of artistic, scientific, and institutional initiatives.
Its meticulous design, which incorporated lighting aspects and, in particular, acoustics considered in the ceiling design, guarantees a quality experience for participants. It is a landmark space in the city of Lisbon, hosting major national and international events.
