Jardim do Torel is located in the heart of Sant’Ana Hill, in a residential area of the Santo António parish, in Lisbon. It is discreetly situated on Rua Júlio de Andrade, a short distance from Campo dos Mártires da Pátria. Its elevated position on the hillside, facing downtown Lisbon and Avenida da Liberdade, places it within an urban environment dotted with 19th-century mansions, lending it a particular atmosphere and a certain refuge from the city's hustle and bustle.
The name Jardim do Torel refers to a family, possibly of Dutch origin, who lived at this location. The space where the garden now stands was part of a larger private estate. In the 19th century, Manuel de Castro Guimarães commissioned the construction of a mansion and a garden on the hillside, designed by architect José Luís Monteiro. Later, in the early 20th century, this property was ceded to the Lisbon City Council, giving rise to the public garden that visitors can enjoy today. Its opening to the public in the following decades transformed a former aristocratic retreat into a point of contemplation accessible to all.
One of Jardim do Torel's greatest attractions is its function as a viewpoint, providing a comprehensive perspective over the center of Lisbon. From its upper terraces, the view extends over Baixa Pombalina, reaching the Tagus River and encompassing the São Roque hill, where the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint is distinguishable. It is a privileged spot for observing the capital's urban panorama, especially as the sun begins to set, painting the sky with warm hues over the Lisbon rooftops.
Jardim do Torel presents an inviting atmosphere, with its layout evoking romantic aesthetics, visible in its winding paths and the Portuguese pavement that covers them. The space integrates small water features and hosts a bronze bust of the notable Portuguese pianist and composer José Vianna da Mota. The tree density offers generous shade, making it ideal for moments of tranquility. Interestingly, during the month of August, the garden takes on an "urban beach" configuration, with the addition of sand, providing a unique and unexpected experience. There is also a lower area with an outdoor café area, which complements the main garden area.
