Located in the parish of Pena, in Lisbon, this garden is situated in an urban area that offers a tranquil environment and proximity to the city's daily life. It is located on Alameda de Santo António dos Capuchos, subtly yet accessibly integrated into the urban fabric of the Portuguese capital.
Originally known as Jardim da Alameda de Santo António dos Capuchos, this green space saw its designation evolve over time. In 2001, it was renamed Jardim da Paz, a name that marks the inauguration of an obelisk by the Dalai Lama, containing the inspiring inscription "Um jardim pela paz". In 2014, a decade after the passing of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo, the only woman to have held the position of prime minister in Portugal and a former resident of the street, the garden was dedicated to her memory with the inauguration of a memorial, thus integrating her name into its official designation.
Despite its modest size, the garden surprises with the richness and variety of its flora. Here one finds a remarkable diversity of trees, including specimens of grevillea, jacaranda, erythrina, yew, willow, and cypress, which contribute to a dense and leafy atmosphere. The garden walls are adorned with climbing plants such as wisteria and bougainvillea. Aquatic elements, such as a waterfall and a small lake, the latter occasionally inhabited by ducks and crossed by a bridge, complement the landscape, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.
Designed for everyone's enjoyment, Jardim da Paz features a children's playground, making it a welcoming place for families. The space is further enriched by a mural painting inspired by tropical themes, a work by the artist Koctel, which adds a vibrant and captivating touch to the atmosphere of leisure and contemplation.
