The Braancamp Freire Garden is nestled in the area of Pena, in the heart of Lisbon. Although set within a dynamic urban context, this green space offers an oasis of tranquility, inviting a moment of pause and relaxation for those venturing through the capital's streets.
The site where the Braancamp Freire Garden now stands holds a history of metamorphosis. Formerly, this land was occupied by a convent, whose structures were progressively dismantled throughout the 1930s and 1940s. With the completion of the demolition work, a new chapter opened for this space in the city.
In 1935, and on the occasion of the city's festivities, an ancient miniature neighborhood, a nostalgic evocation of "Old Lisbon," was created on the site. This theme park captivated the imagination of Lisbon residents at the time, achieving remarkable success. Years later, in 1949, the space was inaugurated in its current form, a geometrically designed garden that endures to this day.
The design of the Braancamp Freire Garden is characterized by a geometric layout that lends order and a sense of harmony to its environment. One of its most notable elements is the central sculpture, titled "The Family," a work by the renowned Portuguese artist Leopoldo de Almeida. This artistic piece plays a dominant role in the space, enriching it with its presence and cultural value.
This garden offers an atmosphere conducive to contemplation and rest. Initially conceived with fewer trees, the space has developed over time, becoming a welcoming retreat. It is an ideal spot for those seeking a moment of serenity, to read, think, or simply observe the city's rhythm from a point of quietude.
