Located in Arroios, in the municipality of Lisbon.
The parish of Anjos was established by Cardinal Henrique of Portugal, separating from the parish of Santa Justa.
Initially, the parish headquarters was a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, which was expanded in the 17th century.
Between 1579 and 1820, the church had college status with 11 chaplains responsible for daily worship services.
The original church was demolished in 1908 for the construction of Avenida D. Amélia (now Avenida Almirante Reis). It was rebuilt by architect José Luis Monteiro on the west side of the avenue.
The new church has a Neoclassical facade, maintaining the proportions of the original.
The 17th and 18th century baroque interiors of the original church were preserved and transferred to the new construction.
The church houses ancient paintings, including a panel by the Mannerist painter Diogo Teixeira, representing Saint Irene and Saint Sebastian, and a rare 16th century painting of Saint Anthony of Lisbon.
