The Convent of the Incarnation, or more appropriately, the Recolhimento da Encarnação (House of Retreat of the Incarnation), is serenely integrated into the historic parish of Pena, in the heart of Lisbon. Its location is characteristic of Lisbon's hills, situated within an urban fabric that ascends and descends through traditional streets and alleys, where buildings from past centuries blend with the city's daily life. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the authentic and less bustling atmosphere that defines this part of the Portuguese capital.
This building possesses a legacy dating back to the early 18th century, having been founded, according to historical records, by D. Maria de Sousa in 1705. It was not a convent in the strictest sense, but rather a recolhimento (house of retreat), an institution intended to house women seeking refuge, a life of spiritual retreat, or protection, often outside formal religious vows. After the devastating earthquake of 1755, the Recolhimento da Encarnação was rehabilitated or rebuilt, a testament to its importance and resilience in post-seismic Lisbon, continuing its mission of shelter and assistance until the extinction of religious orders in Portugal in the 19th century.
The architecture of the Recolhimento da Encarnação reflects the functionality and sobriety typical of 18th-century religious constructions in Lisbon, especially after the Great Earthquake. Although it does not stand out for decorative exuberance, its masonry structure and simple architectural elements contribute to the identity and character of the neighborhood. After the cessation of its religious function, significant parts of the building were adapted for housing or other purposes, a common transformation for many conventual buildings of that era. This adaptation allowed its presence to be maintained, today as an integral and discreet part of Lisbon's urban landscape, blending with the surrounding residential buildings and preserving the memory of a distinct era and purpose.
