Design and Composition

This public garden, whose design dates back to the 1950s, stands out for its formal layout and attention to detail. The square is adorned with a central area paved with traditional calçada portuguesa (Portuguese pavement), where trees rise from circular flowerbeds. This core is flanked by rectangular flowerbeds, densely filled with various plants. At the northern end of the garden, a generously sized lawn area complements the composition, offering visual and functional variety to the ensemble.

Vegetation and Natural Environment

The botanical richness is one of Praça Pasteur Garden's strong points. Throughout the year, visitors can appreciate a variety of mature tree species that contribute to its serene and leafy atmosphere. Among the notable trees are the robust plane trees, the colorful garden pomegranates, the spectacular jacarandas that paint the landscape with their purple hues during flowering season, and the black poplars. The density of these tree canopies offers shade and a cool environment, ideal for a relaxing break or a calm stroll.

Historical Notes

The conception of Praça Pasteur Garden is part of the urban planning of the Areeiro neighborhood, an area developed in the mid-20th century. The landscape architecture project for this garden was designed by Manuel Azevedo Coutinho, dating from 1950. Its creation reflects the intention to harmoniously integrate green and recreational spaces into the city's residential areas, serving as a landmark and a green lung for the surrounding community.
