João do Rio Square Garden

Category: Nature > Garden

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Areeiro

Location

The Jardim da Praça João do Rio is located in the heart of the Areeiro area, in Lisbon, harmoniously integrated into the capital's urban fabric. This green space, although embraced by residential buildings and city movement, particularly on its eastern side bordering Avenida Almirante Reis, offers a tranquil refuge. Its horseshoe shape distinguishes it, creating a unique atmosphere within the area.

Situated in a square that pays homage to the Brazilian writer Paulo Barreto, known by the pseudonym João do Rio, the garden is a striking element in the parish's landscape, functioning as a landmark and a casual meeting point for those passing through.

Design and Atmosphere

Formally conceived in the 1950s, the Jardim da Praça João do Rio features a design that combines simplicity with classic elements of a public garden. It includes lawn areas, some more densely wooded to the west, traversed by orthogonal pedestrian paths. These paths are paved in calçada portuguesa of limestone, a detail that lends a traditional and durable touch to the space.

In the center of the garden, a stone fountain with a cup-shaped spout stands out, contributing to the serene atmosphere of the place. Along its edges and around the seating areas, garden benches invite a pause, allowing visitors to appreciate the tranquility and surrounding vegetation, which includes species such as wild plum, magnolias, and cypresses.

Memory and Culture in the Garden

Beyond its recreational and landscaping function, the Jardim da Praça João do Rio is a place that celebrates culture and memory. Its designation is a direct tribute to João do Rio, pseudonym of Paulo Barreto, a notable figure in literature. This homage is materialized in a monument sculpted in stone and bronze, authored by Álvaro de Brée, inaugurated in 1950, which represents the writer's bust.

At another point in the garden, visitors can discover an additional artistic note: a long slab, resembling a sheet of paper, where the poem "O Segundo Poema do Português Errante," by Manuel Alegre, is engraved. These artistic and literary elements enrich the experience of those passing through the garden, inviting contemplation and knowledge.

A Space for the Community

The Jardim da Praça João do Rio actively serves the surrounding community, being a leisure spot for all ages. It is a place where residents and visitors can enjoy contact with nature in the middle of the city, ideal for relaxed strolls or moments of rest.

For families, the garden features areas dedicated to the youngest, with small playgrounds integrated into the green environment, providing a safe and pleasant space for outdoor play. This aspect highlights the accessible and welcoming nature of the garden, making it a point of informal gathering and socializing.
