Avencas Protected Marine Area

Category: Nature > Reserva natural

District: Lisboa > Cascais > Parede > Baforeira

Location

The Avencas Marine Protected Area is located on the coast of Cascais, in the Baforeira area, Parede. This coastal stretch extends between Praia da Parede and Praia de São Pedro do Estoril, bordered to the north by the Marginal Road. It is characterized by the small Avencas Beach and, in particular, by a vast expanse of rock platforms. During low tide, these rock formations, sculpted by marine erosion, reveal themselves in all their uniqueness, creating a peculiar coastal landscape.

A Unique Marine Ecosystem

This area stands out as a valuable natural sanctuary, particularly due to its intertidal zone, which is exposed and submerged with the rhythm of the tides. The local geology plays a fundamental role, with limestone and basalt dikes giving rise to numerous tide pools and natural channels. These rocky micro-habitats offer refuge to a rich and diverse marine life, making Avencas one of the most biodiverse intertidal zones on the Portuguese coast. It is possible to observe a wide range of fauna and flora species that have remarkably adapted to this dynamic environment. The name "Avencas" derives from a medicinal plant, with a long tradition of use, that was common in the area.

Protected Area: A Commitment

The classification as Avencas Marine Protected Area, in effect since 2016, highlights the ecological importance of this site. Already in 1998, the zone was recognized as the Bio-physical Interest Zone of Avencas (ZIBA), due to its high relevance for conservation. This status protects a sensitive and highly valuable ecosystem, being the first marine protected area with local management in Portugal. Its creation reflects the continuous effort to safeguard marine biodiversity and coastal habitats, ensuring the preservation of this natural heritage for future generations.

Visitor Guidelines

For those visiting the Avencas Marine Protected Area, it is essential to respect the conservation rules to protect its fragility. Observing marine life is an enriching experience, but the collection of any fauna or flora specimens is expressly forbidden. Likewise, fishing, in all its forms, is not permitted. When exploring the rock platforms during low tide, it is important to follow marked paths or existing guidelines, so as to avoid disturbing organisms and their delicate habitats. The anchoring of any type of vessel and the practice of motorized water sports are also prohibited, ensuring the tranquility and integrity of this natural space.
