Aqueduct of the Pipe Fountain

Category: Civil Architecture > Aqueduct

District: Lisboa > Torres Vedras > Torres Vedras > Santa Maria, São Pedro e Matacães

Location

The Aqueduct of the Fountain of Pipes is located in the town of Torres Vedras, extending across the union of the parishes of Santa Maria, São Pedro, and Matacães. This remarkable structure traverses both urban areas and rural landscapes, being observable amidst orchards and farms, as well as crossing the Sizandro River and one of the roads connecting the town.

Its striking presence lends a distinct atmosphere to the surrounding landscape, blending harmoniously with the daily life and nature of the region. It is an element that connects the urban environment to the serenity of the countryside.

History and Purpose

This imposing feat of engineering was conceived with an essential purpose for the development of Torres Vedras: the water supply to the town. Water, vital for the population, was conducted through this aqueduct to the Fountain of Pipes, a central point of the ancient city. Although the exact date of its construction is somewhat lost in time, there are documentary references that prove its existence since at least 1561, indicating an even more remote origin, perhaps in the 14th century.

Over the centuries, the aqueduct benefited from various interventions, including significant restoration works in the 18th century and more recently around 1990. These actions demonstrate the continuous concern for the preservation of an element that was, and continues to be, of great value to the community.

Its Notable Architecture

The Aqueduct of the Fountain of Pipes is distinguished by its remarkable architecture, characterized by sections extending for over two kilometers. In some parts, the water flowed underground, while in others it rose to the surface, displaying a visible structure.

The most impressive section of the aqueduct is composed of two superimposed orders of arches, designed with the classic "perfect vault." The upper arches, of smaller dimensions, align harmoniously above the lower arches. A particular highlight is the monumental arch that crosses the Sizandro River and the road to Runa, an imposing passage that was widened in the 18th century and where the coat of arms with the arms of the town of Torres Vedras can be observed.

Recognition and Preservation

The historical and architectural importance of the Aqueduct of the Fountain of Pipes is undeniable, having been officially recognized as a National Monument in 1910. This classification underscores its heritage value and the need for its safeguarding for future generations.

Its continuous preservation reflects the care taken to keep alive a fundamental part of the region's past, allowing the Gothic structure to remain a historical-cultural landmark and an element of interest for those who visit Torres Vedras.
