This section of the aqueduct and its water mother are located in Janes, in the urbanisation of Alcabideche, municipality of Cascais. Integrated into the local landscape, this historical monument is situated next to the Ribeira dos Mochos, a natural element that, in times past, was an integral part of its course, although today they are physically separated.
The Aqueduct of Janes, also known as a section of the Antiga Fonte Nova (Old New Spring), dates back to the 16th century. Its historical importance is recognized, being classified as a Monument of Municipal Interest. This structure is a testament to the ingenious human capacity to ensure the essential water supply for communities, revealing the techniques and needs of past eras.
The complex comprises a Water Mother and a segment of aqueduct. The Water Mother is a stone masonry construction, octagonal in plan, designed to protect the water intake. Inside, a spiral vault stands out, built with more rustic stone, a rare and highly interesting architectural feature.
The aqueduct, with a length of approximately 300 metres, features a robust plastered masonry structure, crowned by a vaulted stone masonry roof. Along its course, different construction approaches can be observed, possibly resulting from interventions in distinct phases. In some places, there is a second channel, about 150 metres long, which shows techniques such as support on corbels and brick arches. The height of the aqueduct varies according to the terrain's gradient.
Elements such as its four tronconical, approximately 2-metre-high vents, functioned as inspection chambers or ventilation points. Near the Water Mother, the aqueduct includes a notable ashlar window, with openings indicating the original existence of a portal or grate, highlighting the care taken in protecting the precious water resource.
