Roque Gameiro House

Category: Civil Architecture > Museum

District: Lisboa > Amadora > Amadora > Bairro Janeiro

Location

The Casa Roque Gameiro is located in Amadora, in the neighborhood known as Bairro Janeiro, in an area that, although now fully integrated into the urban fabric, evokes a past with a more rural character. Originally, this area was known as Porcalhota or Venteira, with the presence of fields and windmills, offering a serene environment that once inspired artistic creation.

The House and its Creator

Built in 1898, Casa Roque Gameiro was the family residence of the illustrious Portuguese watercolorist Alfredo Roque Gameiro. It was the artist himself who designed the project for his house, infusing it with the taste and ideals of the nationalist elite of the turn of the 19th century. This construction became not only a home but also a fundamental space for the life and creative output of Roque Gameiro and his offspring.

An Example of the "Portuguese House"

The architecture of Casa Roque Gameiro is a remarkable testament to the style then designated as "Casa Portuguesa" (Portuguese House), very much in vogue at the end of the 19th century. Its design featured important contributions from figures such as Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Raul Lino, resulting in a harmonious fusion of architectural characteristics from various regions of the country. The interiors reflect the artistic sensibility of the time, displaying rich decoration with elements of naturalist, revivalist, and popular inspiration.

The Cradle of the "Brush Tribe"

Beyond a residence, this singular building was the true epicenter of the famous "Tribo dos Pincéis" (Brush Tribe). Alfredo Roque Gameiro's five children followed in his artistic footsteps, leaving a significant mark on the aesthetic landscape of the first half of the 20th century in Portugal. The house functioned as a vibrant family studio, where art was an intrinsic component of daily life. This artistic legacy extended even further through the marriages of some daughters to other prominent artists, solidifying their influence on the history of Portuguese art.

A Dynamic Cultural Hub

Currently, Casa Roque Gameiro plays an important role as an active cultural hub in Amadora. Converted into a house of culture and museum, this municipal space hosts exhibitions and various activities throughout the year. Thus, the connection to art and heritage is kept alive, contributing to the cultural dynamics of the locality and offering an interesting point of contact with the artistic legacy that flourished here.
