The Moinho da Quinta do Meio (Quinta do Meio Windmill) is located on Alto do Moinho, an elevation in Alfragide, in the municipality of Amadora. Its elevated position offers a comprehensive view of the surrounding area, providing a tranquil vantage point over the urban environment.
This windmill is an important vestige of the intense milling activity that, for centuries, shaped the landscape and economy of the western Lisbon region. The territory that today forms the municipality of Amadora was, at one time, dotted with dozens of these structures, essential for flour production.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1901, the Moinho da Quinta do Meio was one of four mills still in operation, out of a total of seven that existed on this same elevation. An archaeological intervention, carried out in 1993, contributed to the understanding and appreciation of this unique example of local heritage.
Currently, the Moinho da Quinta do Meio is the only survivor of that original group, standing out as a unique element in the landscape of Alfragide. Its presence recalls an era when life and work were governed by the cycles of nature and the manual labor of milling.
Its robust and traditional architecture, characteristic of the region's windmills, reflects the popular engineering of the time. The windmill symbolizes Amadora's connection to its rural and agricultural roots, offering a glimpse into a past that shaped the local community's identity before its urban expansion.
