The Sculptural Ensemble

The artistic ensemble dedicated to Alda Lara is a creation by the sculptor Júlio Quaresma. The work stands out for its contemporary approach, incorporating light as a fundamental element. It is composed of four quadrangular elements, each conceived to represent distinct phases and themes of the poetess's life. One of the elements evokes the idea of departure and return, while another symbolizes the land of her childhood. A third structure, more abstract, refers to her intellectual, political, and literary journey. The fourth element, in turn, displays the words IDENTITY and FREEDOM, highlighting the central pillars of her poetic thought and her life experience.

The Tribute to the Poetess

Alda Ferreira Pires Barreto de Lara Albuquerque, born in Benguela, Angola (1930-1962), was a prominent figure in literature. Although she studied medicine in Portugal, her main passion and dedication were to poetry. In her works, Alda Lara deeply explored the Angolan experience, addressing universal themes such as Freedom, Love, and Justice. Her verses reflect the complexity of the human condition, her identity as an African woman, and, above all, her profound connection to and longing for her homeland and its people. This monument celebrates her remarkable contribution to poetry and her unyielding spirit.
