The monument dedicated to Alda do Espírito Santo is located in Tapada do Mocho, an area in Oeiras. This location is part of a vast green space that offers a tranquil environment for a stroll. Its position provides a serene setting, characteristic of this area of the municipality of Oeiras.
This representation is a form of tribute to the notable poet and political figure Alda do Espírito Santo. The sculpture is authored by the Santomean artist Zémé, establishing a cultural connection between the work and its honoree. The sculptural ensemble is directly inspired by the poet's most famous work, the poem "Lá no Água Grande", seeking to evoke the images and essence of her writing.
Alda do Espírito Santo (1926-2010) was a prominent voice in African literature in Portuguese. Her poetry, nationalistic in nature, denounced colonial realities and gave voice to those who suffered on the cocoa and coffee plantations, symbolizing resistance and the connection to the land and to women. She was also a central figure in the independence movements and held ministerial and parliamentary positions in São Tomé and Príncipe, also being the author of the lyrics of that country's national anthem. The monument in Oeiras thus celebrates not only her literary art but also her role as an activist and defender of freedom and Lusophone cultural identity.
