History

Created in 1645 as the Royal Hunting Ground of Alcântara, renamed after the 1755 Earthquake, and is a Property of Public Interest.

Location

Located in Alcântara, Lisbon, with access from Rua Jau and the Monsanto gate.

Area and Protection

Covers 100 hectares, surrounded by a wall that preserves a unique forest and an internationally recognized botanical reserve.

Administration

Managed by the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Higher Institute of Agronomy) since 1917.
