Burnay Palace or Palace of the Patriarchs

Category: Civil Architecture > Palace

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Junqueira

Location

Situated in the historic Junqueira area of Lisbon, Burnay Palace is located along a riverside strip that, for centuries, has been chosen by the nobility and high bourgeoisie for the construction of palatial residences. Its privileged location benefits from its proximity to the Tagus River, a landscaped and strategic element that has always defined the identity of this part of the capital.

The palace is part of a cluster of imposing buildings that characterise Lisbon's western bank, offering a glimpse of the architectural grandeur that once punctuated this area of the city.

History and Legacy

The history of Burnay Palace dates back to the late 17th century, although its current appearance is the result of a profound intervention and enlargement that occurred in the 18th century. It was during this period that the building was acquired by D. Tomás de Almeida, the first Patriarch of Lisbon, becoming his official residence and, consequently, becoming known as the Palace of the Patriarchs. This acquisition granted it a status of great ecclesiastical and social relevance in Lisbon at the time.

Later, in the 19th century, the palace was acquired by the influential and affluent Burnay family, who bequeathed their name to it, by which it is predominantly known today. This succession of distinguished owners reflects the continued importance of the building throughout the centuries, adapting to different purposes, while always maintaining its imposing stature and historical value.

Architecture and Interior Spaces

Burnay Palace is a notable example of Portuguese Baroque architecture, particularly the opulence of the Joanine period. Its facade, though of contained elegance, heralds the grandeur of the interior spaces. Upon entering, the highlight is a monumental staircase of honour, which constitutes one of the highlights of its architectural and decorative design.

Its noble halls, once the setting for important receptions and official events, reveal a remarkable decorative richness, with ornate ceilings, elaborate stucco work, and a profusion of azulejos, a distinctive element of Portuguese art. The palace's private chapel is another space of great interest, due to its artistic beauty and sacred details. The extensive and well-maintained gardens surrounding the building complement the experience, offering a green and serene counterpoint to the main building's imposing presence.
