Located on Rua do Cruzeiro, in the parish of Ajuda, in Lisbon.
The chapel was probably built during the reign of Queen Maria I, and replaces a hermitage that already existed in the 16th century.
The name comes from a cross that a sailor, Gaspar Manso, placed on the site in 1609 as part of a vow. This cross is now in the Carmo Archaeological Museum.
Until 1901, the chapel was a meeting point for an annual festival and a mass dedicated to Our Lord of the Cruzeiro and Rio Seco. After that date, devotion diminished and the chapel fell into disrepair.
Recently, the chapel has been restored and preserved for visitors interested in exploring this piece of local history.
