Villa Portela is located in Leiria, in the Sargentos Neighborhood, an area distinguished by its urban and green surroundings. Situated in a slightly elevated position, this property offers a unique perspective over the city. Its setting, marked by a vast garden and lush vegetation, creates a serene and distinct ambiance within the Leiria landscape.
Built in 1894 by Roberto Charters Henriques d'Azevedo, Villa Portela is a remarkable example of 19th-century architecture. Its design, inspired by Swiss chalets and featuring influences from English Victorian style, gives it a unique appearance in the city. Its facades, painted in a pink hue, and roofs with prominent eaves, reveal a particular and elegant aesthetic. This building was even a pioneer in Leiria, as it incorporated internal amenities like hot and cold water from its construction, something unusual for the time.
Villa Portela was originally a summer residence and a vast agricultural estate. Over time, it became one of Leiria's most emblematic historical properties, witnessing the lives of a family connected to historical events of the city. Its cultural and architectural value led to its classification as a Monument of Municipal Interest in 2019. In addition to the chalet, the property boasts an extensive garden area, spanning over seventeen thousand square meters. This green space is a crucial element, housing a diversity of plant species that enrich the ecological and scenic value of the locality.
With the aim of opening its doors to the community, Villa Portela is being rehabilitated to transform into an Arts Centre. This ambitious project aims to create a dynamic cultural space, where the historic buildings and gardens will be adapted to host new functions. Areas dedicated to exhibitions, a library, and, in the renovated outdoor spaces, an open-air auditorium and areas for events are planned. This transformation intends to honor the legacy of the site, offering a new hub of art and culture in the heart of Leiria.
