Located on the slopes of the Serra da Portela, in Pousaflores, Ansião municipality, the Ciclo do Pão benefits from a setting of oak and rockrose trees, with a view over the Arunca River valley. The surroundings combine natural rock and traditional cobbled paths, conferring a tranquil and authentic atmosphere.
The complex stands next to a restored windmill, which stands out with its distinct silhouette against the horizon, offering the visitor the feeling of being integrated into a preserved rural space.
Inaugurated in 2011, this project was born from the region's cereal heritage. Based on old local structures, it explores the stages that transform seed into bread—from sowing, through milling, to baking.
The ethnographic proposal guides the visitor through the history of cereals, revealing traditional agricultural practices and tools that broaden the understanding of bread's role in Portuguese rural culture.
The main building was designed to display various regional products in situ and, above all, three clay and brick ovens, aligned under a simple shed that blends with the rock. These ovens, with their rounded vaults, evoke the original forms of communal baking.
Nearby, the windmill maintains its intact rotation mechanism, illustrating how a single person could operate the entire machinery. The combination of stone, wood, and agricultural elements creates a space where visitors feel in direct contact with local memory and know-how.
